Bunny Chow - an Indian twist from the streets of South Africa

One of the chic dish finding its place in upscale restaurants nowadays is Bunny Chow is actually a street food from South Africa, especially Durban with a colonial history.
Though the name may mislead many to relate it with Chowmein but nowhere near it. Curry in a bread loaf is the actual description of this dish. The word ‘Bunny’ actually came from the word ‘Baniya’. In the pre-independence era when the British brought Indian labors to South Africa to work in the sugar fields of the Natal province, they used to have the curries and bread as their meal. Bunny is slang of Baniyas and Chow is a colloquial stand of the Sanskrit word ‘Chasya’ or the 'licking with tongue' (a.k.a ‘chusna’ in Hindi).
The original Bunny chow was just bread and curry but with time it evolved and become chic with meat curry and bread loaf.
Enough of history, phew!
For the recipe, all you need is to make your choice of curry with veggies or meat or poultry. I made chicken in tandoor style with gravy. Take a quarter piece of bread loaf and hollow out the center to make a bowl. Spoon the cooked hot curry into this bread bowl. Topped with some freshly made salsa as I didn’t have any cabbage or carrots to make a quick slaw, which is served traditionally with bunny chow.

And Served hot on my all new Turkish ceramic plate!
